Innovative Strategies to Empower Youth with Intersecting Identities

This workshop shared promising practices for developing inclusive learning environments for youth. By acknowledging and supporting youth’s intersecting identifies—e.g., a youth could identify as lesbian, Latina, and having a learning disability—we can honor and value all aspects of their identities and meet their unique strengths and needs. Panelists shared their proven effective practices:

  • New York HempsteadWorks’ pioneering staff development trainings have led to LGBTQIA+ and disability-inclusive services, language, policies, and outreach.
  • Work Hawaii’s Youth Program’s pandemic-inspired virtual job tours have helped rural Pacific Islander youth with disabilities explore different industries and the program establish formal agreements with businesses for work-based learning experiences for youth.
