ODEP Releases New Policy Brief on Health Care Transition and Employment for Youth with Disabilities

January 10, 2014

The Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) at the U.S. Department of Labor released a new policy brief   recently on health care transition and employment. "Healthy Transitions: A Pathway to Employment for Youth with Chronic Health Conditions and Other Disabilities" details a 2012 study commissioned by ODEP to better understand the relationship between disability (including chronic health conditions); health and wellness; and transition and employment outcomes for youth with disabilities.

The study revealed that youth with chronic health conditions and other disabilities face a number of challenges in accessing health care transition services and stresses the need to:
  • underscore the interdependence between health and wellness, and employment through education and outreach to youth and their parents and other caring adults; and
  • provide health-care providers and other youth service professionals with professional development opportunities to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to guide youth through a coordinated self-determined, cross-discipline transition planning process.
