LEAD and DEI Partner to Discuss WIOA Section 188 Best Practices

March 9, 2016

In February, the U.S. Department of Labor's Disability Employment Initiative (DEI) held an interactive Peer Exchange for DEI grantees to review and discuss Section 188 of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). Section 188 implements the nondiscrimination and equal opportunity provisions of the WIOA, which prohibit discrimination on the grounds of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, political affiliation or belief and disability.

To highlight the critical elements of Section 188, the National Center on Leadership for the Employment and Economic Advancement of People with Disabilities (LEAD) joined the DEI Peer Exchange to offer an overview of its recent webinar on Section 188, which highlighted a reference guide released in July 2015 by the U.S. Department of Labor, "Promising Practices in Achieving Universal Access and Equal Opportunity: A Section 188 Disability Reference Guide." The guide features American Job Centers with promising practices that correlate with specific nondiscrimination requirements in Section 188 and offers examples of current strategies that can help promote equal access for individuals with disabilities. With Section 188 providing the foundation for DEI, the Peer Exchange was an important opportunity for DEI and LEAD to come together to share best practices.
